Neuroregeneration

The neurotrauma field deals with the most critical events of trauma patients and is composed of two teams of specialists.

Central Nervous System (CNS)

The first team deals with spinal cord injuries, focusing primarily on imaging techniques, molecular mechanisms (proteomics), and therapeutic aspects to reduce secondary damage.

Peripheral Nervous System

The second team is interested in peripheral nerve repair and reinnervation to targeted organs (i.e. skeletal muscles). This includes both experimental and clinical studies which deal with improving peripheral nerve regeneration and micro-surgical suturing techniques. This research also improves end results of brain function by the use and enhanced plasticity of the brain cells. If nerve defects cannot be sutured directly, they are bridged with bioabsorbable, synthetic scaffolds, populated with cells and growth factors.
